If Only the Romans Had Found a Sexier Religion
Visit any museum of Western classical art, especially art from the middle ages and early Renaissance and you will be confronted with a deluge of Christian images. Christ on the cross is a particular favourite. The temptation of Saint Anthony is one of the few subjects that allows for creativity. But most of the paintings are Christ on a cross, Mary holding baby Jesus and that sort of thing. Frankly, the result is a lot of incredibly well painted but unstimulating paintings and sculptures.
But what if the Romans had instead decided to go with a religion the espoused free love, nudity and kinky sex? Not only would museums of medieval art be far more exciting, but we Westerners would certainly be less hung up over sex.
Pity.
